Brighton Festival 2016

Commissioned by Brighton Festival 2016 and curated by Laurie Anderson with support from South East Dance. Research and development supported by Without Walls

"The Last Resort, an inspired take on the seaside tourist walk...crunching across the pebbles, we listened to soundscapes and Big Brother-esque instructions. The results were immersive and entertaining." The Cusp Magazine

"A dystopian walking tour. From decontamination protocols and corporate disclaimers...the familiar troupes of a sci-fi thriller are all here. By the end the title has taken on a darkly punning new meaning."
The Stage

The Last Resort is a darkly comic dystopian walking tour. Set in a future, when our planet is no longer habitable, two participants at a time are invited to revisit Earth in a bizarre audio experience. Advertised as a museum tour set in the exact place of Earths ‘last resort’, the audio instruction/narrative leads participants on a 40min walk along deserted terrain. Once there, participants are challenged to discover the false truth of the earths demise. The work examines contemporary political and environmental issues, imagining worst possible outcomes. Plagued with lies, deceits and false information the work questions the power of manipulation in contemporary culture.

" A science fiction story played out on headphones whilst participants uncover a mystery on Portslade beach." ITV News

Imagine a barren landscape, a neon light stands bleak and stark. Welcome to The Last Resort.
For those brave enough to return to this long deserted resort; beauty, science fiction and history merge to create this original and unique outdoor experience.

Arriving at a museum in the future, visitors embark in pairs on a journey along a desolate stretch of beach to rediscover a fantastical reality. Why do transmissions of the past interrupt this guided tour? Why did those that came to this resort never leave?

Using binaural technology to create a constantly shifting world of sound, AOD (artists Rachel Champion and Tristan Shorr) create an exciting immersive work that takes a wry look at science fiction traditions and dystopian societies.

The Last Resort will take you and a partner on an unusual tour into an even more unfamiliar world, inviting you to actively explore your own imaginations and rediscover a future past.
